Arnold Swinnerton.
« on: Saturday 01 July 17 14:11 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

Arnold Swinnerton born Stoke on Trent England 1870.
He went to Canada in 1903 and sailed on the Tunisian to St John's.

Arnold was later to be found to have enlisted for WW1 in the West Lancs
Brigade RFA on 24 April 1915. But he was discharged on the 30th 'having made a false statement on his attestation form.

He was then shown on the electoral for Foleshill in 1930.  He is supposed to have died in Coventry but I have not found it or when he came back from Canada.

Can anyone see him?

Thanks,
bswinno.

He was then shown on the electoral for Foleshill in 1930.

Thanks,
bswinno.

The 1930 Electoral Roll for Foleshill is for a John Arnold Swinnerton Dyer who was born in 1905. So not your Arnold Swinnerton.

A British Trade Union register has Arnold Swinnerton of Hanley with a date of birth as 17-12 - ?

Therefore his date of birth is likely to be 17 Dec 1869.

Thanks Guys,

JJ What year was that Trade Directory for?
So it is not him shown in the 1930 directory.
Could be now that he never returned from Canada.

thanks,
bswinno.

The date he was registered was 4.5.1894 - Excluded in 1896 (one with his D of B)

Another Trade Union Register has him recorded - 5.9.1890 - Excluded 1893

You are correct it is not him on the 1930 Electoral register.

Surely he must have returned from Canada if you have him joining up for WW1?

JJ ,

I am trying to find out where he enlisted from. Not sure if he could have done it in Canada.
It seems he was only in for a short period as he was too old, so they discharged him.
He had previous service in the Militia.

Arnold's medical examination took place on 24 April 1915 in Liverpool. Therefore it would seem that he had returned to the UK.

Equally his Service record shows he was 'Home' from 24.4.15 to 30.4.15

It all implies that he was in the UK during April 1915.

JJen,

Well that's settled then he was back in the UK.
Yes those dates confirm what I have been told. That was the time which he served. Apparently he lied about his age. Would have been 45 so they discharged him.

But then he disappears.
It is said he died in Coventry But he does not show up.
Also that return trip  back from Canada is a mystery.
