Charles GALLAGHER - (New Jersey) Information

A few years later now, there is a New Jersey death index online, which has a death for Mary M. Gallagher, age 73, on 23 Nov 1980 in East Orange, Essex Co.  The Social Security number matches the one on the Social Security death index who was born 16 Jul 1907.

There is also now a WWII draft registration card online for Charles Joseph Gallagher, 105 Cortlandt St., Belleville, New Jersey, age 37, born 26 Jun. 1904 in Scotland.  The person who would always know his address was Mary Gallagher at the same address.  His employer was Newark Central Warehouse Co., 110 Edison Pl., Newark, NJ.  He was white, 5'8" tall, 145 lbs., blue eyes, blonde hair, light complexion.  Date of registration was 15 Feb. 1942.

The New Jersey death index has 2 Charles Gallaghers who died in 1968.  https://archive.org/details/NJ_Death_Index_1968_A-G/page/n272  Using the vital records codes from here - http://www.bringoutyerdead.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/NJ-Vital-Records-Codes.pdf - they were:

Charles J. Gallagher, died in the Veterans Hospital in East Orange on 4 Feb. 1968, and place of residence was North Bergen Township, Hudson Co., NJ. 

Charles P. Gallagher, died 25 Mar. 1968 in Newark and place of residence Newark.

I'm guessing the latter is the right one, even though the middle initial doesn't match the draft registration card.  That date of death would probably fit with the April burial with this Charles.  https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/100193/rosedale-and-rosehill-cemetery  The Rosedale cemetery's website gives 4 Apr. as the date of burial.  https://rosedale-rosehill.com/name-lookup/search-results/  Also, the zip code of last residence on the SSDI for the Charles with the 25 Jun 1904 birthdate fits with Newark.

Thank you so much for that information. I wonder about those middle names. His birth record has none, I wonder if one was a Confirmation name received in Church? Why the difference between P. and Joseph also? I already checked out Rosedale, they told me Charles P. Gallagher lies without a headstone. Might be good to double check to be sure of that. I also wonder about the divergence of dates regarding 25th June and 26th June for Charles J. Gallagher? The physical description is a little odd, the only black and white photograph we have of him shows dark hair, but perhaps that's the camera? I think the next step might be to verify that niece mentioned on Mary Gallagher's obituary, and take it from there. She could even still be living, and might have information on the family. Though I do notice on the obituary that she is listed as "Mary Margaret". Again why the middle name appearing from nowhere? On those directories posted earlier in the thread, it's "Mary H." which further complicates it.

Looks like I found an obituary for the niece - https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/palmbeachpost/obituary.aspx?n=colette-conroy&pid=171331212&fhid=5499. It mentions she was in New Rochelle which matches with the Colette Conroy on the obituary. I wonder which of Mary Gallagher's siblings married into the Conroys? That would verify some links.

My husband's grandmother is called Mary Ann by lots of people, but she's technically Mary Margaret.     Sometimes the obituary or death certificate is just what the survivors think, rather than actual fact.

Considering that common names are involved, you could check Scotland's People to see if there was another Charles Gallagher born 25 or 26 June 1904 anywhere in the country, but I wouldn't be surprised if your Charles was just confused about the correct date.

I checked out Mary Margaret's obituary again, it says she had a sister named Ellen Gillen of Orange. I haven't found her, and she wasn't on those census records mentioned here in the thread, which is strange. As to Colette Conroy, I also can't see anything obvious linking her to the family.

I might have asked before, how can I get Charles' death certificate? Thanks!

Collette M Conroy was the daughter of Howard J Conroy & Collette Gallagher.

Mary Margaret Gallagher, Collette (Gallagher) Conroy & Edith (Gallagher) Gillen were all daughters of John F & Emma Gallagher. Edith married James Gillen.
