In the 1861 census, (Alfred) Charles W. List is living with his parents, his brother (and SEVEN servants!) in East Down, Devon. Just let me know if you want the census info (you may already have it!)

I would love the info on the 1861--haven't got that far yet!  I seem to remember there was some archeological find in the area. Am I right?  Kate List, my gran in law, was married in Coggs church. Is that nearby?

Yeah, there's been lots of archaeological activity in and around the village. Cogges, by the way, is just over 5 miles, basically a village suburb of Witney. Now to the serious business of censuses.

Alfred C. W. List is a scholar at a school in Bideford. His birth place is given as Barnstable

East Down, Devon
Joseph List, head, mar, 40, farmer 350 acres emp. 4[?] labs, born Pilton
Ann H., wife, mar, 40, farmer's wife, born East Down
Alfred C. W., son, 4, born Shirwell
Frank S., son, 2, born Shirwell

Shirwell, Pilton, and East Down are a few miles away from each other in the Barnstable area of Devon.
