I've just found this entry for 1851

Samuel WEEDARD born Clophill circa 1816 living in Bedfordshire

I think this might be a weird mistranscription of Underwood. Woul SKS check the original entry for me please?

Sadly he is nowhere to be found in Bedfordshire 

Samuel UNDERWOOD born Clophill Beds circa 1822 occupation plasterer

In 1861 he is in Luton  married to Hannah born Wavendham Bucks circa 1829, but as their eldest child is only 8 I don't know whether they were already married in 1851.

FreeBMD has a marriage in Luton in Sept quarter 1850 of Samuel Underwood. One of the other parties is a Hannah Payne. If this is your couple then unfortunately they are probably in Luton in Mar 1851!

Does anyone have access to the 1851 index? If they do please post the reference quickly as I'm about to embark on a trawl through!

Thanks that marriage is a possibility. There is an extracted IGI ref, it is Hannah Payne that Samuel married so seems a likely bet. If it is any help, they are in St Mary's Parish on all other censuses - Albert Rd in 1861. Thanks once more for your efforts.

Might be Sam's brother?

Do you want Clophill 1851 as well?

Been through Luton twice with no success I'm afraid.

The only Underwoods in Clophill in 1851 were

The Bedfordshire FHS 1851 index has Samuel's brothers John, George, & Benjamin living together at Clophill, but no entry for Samuel at Clophill. Unless I'm missing something the index doesn't semm to give the complete reference. If you find them I would be very interested in seeing a transcription.

Hi Jan

I only have 2 of the 25 books in the Bedfordshire 1851 Census Index series. The ones I have are Volume 4 Book1 (Shillington, Gravenhurst, Silsoe, Clophill, & Holwell) and Volume 4 Book 2 (Haynes, Houghton Conquest, Ampthill, & Maulden). Samuel isn't in either of them. In fact there are no other Underwoods apart from the ones at Clophill.

I would have checked these earlier but I haven't looked at them for about 5 years and I had a bit of trouble finding them
