Harding/Harden, Wyatt, Westcott and Toger families
« on: Wednesday 26 July 17 12:17 BST (UK) »
Hello,

One set of my great-great-great-grandparents came from Devon. The man was James Westcott Harding, born 1845, in Thorverton. His wife was Sarah Brown Wyatt, born 1834, in Plympton St. Mary. They married in Aylesford, Kent, in 1867. James' mother's maiden name was Westcott (from Upton Pyne), but I'm not sure what the Brown connection is to Sarah. Her mother's maiden name was Toger (from Staverton, if memory serves).

I'd appreciate any information on James and Sarah's grandparents and anyone earlier on. The Harden/Harding name change has restricted me a bit.

Thanks,

Adam McGregor

hi
Let's start with Sarah's parents
William Kerswell Wyatt married Elizabeth Tozer 13.11.1828 at Plymouth St Andrew.
William is b c 1790 at Plym st Mary presumably baptised 9.12.1788 to Kerswill and Sarah Wyatt At St Mary Plym
and Elizabeth 1806 as you say at Staverton. Bapt 8.1.1809  d of William and Agnes Tozer.

The transcription doesn't tell us but presumably William had been married before.
Possible siblings for William have the parents William and Sarah Wyatt- Walter 7.9.1781,Mary 27.5.1782,Mary Kerwill 26.7.1784 ,Sarah 16.10.1786 ,Thomas 15.1.1791,Peter Kerswell Wyatt 15.2.1793 and Robert Kerwill Wyatt 26 May 1795 born 29 Sep 1794,Christine 28.1.1798 and 7.3.1798 Catherine Bennett Wyatt born 4.7.1798 bapt  3rd March 1799 Charlotte 14.6/8.8.1800  at Plympton.

This fits with a marriage William Wyett and Sarah Brown 2.7.1781 at Plympton.

So the Brown is Sarah's grandmother's maiden name.

Do you have any more on the Wyatts/Browns? What about the Westcotts, Togers or Hardens/Hardings?

The Hardings
William Harding(dad) son of William and Sarah Harding husbandman baptised Thorverton  7.10.1816 of Raddon hamlet
Sisters Harriet 31.1.1808,Sarah 22.7.1810,Elizabeth 24.12.1820 ,Jane 23.5.1823,and John 24.10.1813 as Harding
Sarah Harden 30.3.1806

Father William Harding buried there 6 Sep 1854 age 71 from Raddon
The couple are on the 1851 census born 1783 and 1781 Thorverton under Harden.
I'm struggling to find a marriage.There's a choice of 3 Countisbury  1802 ,Tiverton 1805  or Sidmouth 1806.

There don't seem to be any baptism for William Harding sticking out but my session on the Library computer has run out so that's it .

Quick look William Tozer and Agnes Lapthorpe of Staverton bach and spinst married 8.4.1808.

Thanks. The birth record provided a maiden name of Toger, but everyone else has said Tozer. I'll take it down as Tozer.
