Joseph Woolley - being very elusive!

I am trying to trace a Joseph Woolley and its proving very frustrating!

17.4.1876 at St Michaels, Rushall, Staffordshire

Joseph Woolley bachelor of Heath End miner father James Woolley miner to
Mary Ann Tasker spinster of Heath End father John Tasker pattern maker

The family is easy to trace from 1881 Joseph always lists his place of birth as Walsall c 1855 BUT there is no sign of him before then

There is a baptism of a Joseph Woolley 1849 at Walsall with parents James and Sarah but he died later that same year and a Joseph Woolley born 1855 West Bromwich but he married someone else

Any suggestions?

He could have made up a fathers name when he married or he was illegitimate and his mother then married a James Woolley - lots of permutations  :-\

Have you looked for other Joseph's (no surname) born c1855 Walsall? 
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

Unfortunately that gives me 60 possible matches on the 1861 census why did he suddenly decide to use his fathers name when he married!

I will have to see if I can whittle them down a bit

Yes I went through and ignored the ones that had older siblings which gave me a list of 10 names but crossed those off through other means - I'm stumped  ???

Have you checked joseph's name on the gro index for the mothers maiden name? Could he have been illegitimate. Have either of the parents been married before? Although you've probably checked those already.

I don't know what name he was registered under and you cant search the GRO on just the mothers maiden name without putting in a surname :(

Edwin Woolley married Jane Scriven 1844 but there is no Joseph on either the 61/71 so he must have died
