re sarah ann shaw
« on: Sunday 06 August 17 06:41 BST (UK) »
Hi I have looked extensively for the parents of my great great grandmother and seem to become more confused the more I look as new doors open that can't be explained. I hope that some Rootschat experts may be able to help as they have done before!
According to her marriage and other records, such as census records, Sarah Ann Shaw was born in Manchester, Lancashire around 1838-1839 to a George Shaw who was a bookmaker (on her marriage record). Her address at time of marriage was 22 Carver St, Chorlton on Medlock, Lancashire and she was a spinster. I have attached a copy of this marriage. Someone named Emma was a witness but I can't decipher the last name.
In 1858 Sarah Ann Shaw married Thomas Aldred; she had two children to him, Henry (my g grandfather) and Amy Aldred. Thomas Aldred must have died before 1871 as in 1871 Sarah was living as a housekeeper with her 2 children at the house of Charles Atkinson. I believe she had 2 children to Charles, born under her married name of Aldred, Frederick Aldred and Louisa Atkinson Aldred (both of these had names changed to Atkinson by the 1911 census). By 1901, Charles Atkinson had also died and Sarah is living with the younger children (Frederick and Louisa) as well as two spinsters who are named as her sisters, Mary Ellen Nodin and Elizabeth Jane Nodin. I have searched extensively but have found no connection to the Nodin family nor any record where Sarah was living with (as possibly adopted by) the Nodin family. i had considered that she may have married a Nodin sibling of Mary or Elizabeth's after her husband Thomas Aldred had died 9so may have been a sister in law), but have found no record of that either. This connection with the Nodin family is a complete mystery. By 1911, Sarah is still living at the same address with one of the Nodin sisters, Mary Ellen (Elizabeth Nodin had died in 1902) and she is again named as a sister! By this stage Sarah is calling herself Sarah Atkinson.
I have checked in the census records for the Nodin family and it appears that they had visitors from a Shore family (William R Shore born about 1828) and an Anna M Shore, possibly Shaw mis-spelt as Shore?
I would appreciate any light that can be shone on the parents of Sarah Ann Shaw. With thanks, Deb

This is the suggested birth for her:
Sarah Ann Shaw mmn Williamson  March quarter 1839, Chorlton

Added:
Could that be a BOOT maker on the marriage certificate, as I can find a baptism in January 1844 for a Joseph Shaw, parents George and Mary, with George a cordwainer

I think George is a boot maker not a book maker.

On the 1851 census there is George (1818) occ. boot and shoe maker with wife Mary Ann (1818) shoe binder.   The children are Sarah A, (1839), Elizabeth (1842) and John (1848).

The address is Chester Street, Manchester, Chorlton
Ashford: Somerset, London
England: Devon, London, New Zealand
Holdway: Wiltshire
Hooper: Bristol, Somerset
Knowling: Devon, London
Southcott: Devon, China
Strong: Wiltshire
Watson: Cambridgeshire
White: Bristol
Windo - Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wiltshire

(With wife and children Ann, Harry, Emma and Herbert)

George's father's name on the marriage certificate.
