In my great grandfather's obituary from February 1951 there is a mention of his sister attending the funeral.

My great grandfather was James Dolan and he died in Cloughjordan, Co. Tipperary. He was however from Co. Offaly, most likely from Glebe. His sister is named only as Sr. Patricia.

My question is how does one go about tracing a nun. An obvious start would be the newspapers since they invariably recorded everything to do with the religious. Anybody else have any ideas.

Thanks for the reply. Might be worth following up although she would have been very old by the 1960s.

Hi. I was wondering if you had any luck finding Sister Patricia?  My grandma had three sisters that became nuns and I cannot find ANYTHING on them. There are thousands of churches. I have no idea where to start. Just curious if you were able to find anything or where to start. Thanks.

Just for information

Prior to Vatican II (approx 1966 onwards) a woman gave up her name and was given a "name in religion". So the name she was referred to was not usually her given name until the late 1960s and even at that point some older nuns retained their religious name only.

Death records sometimes give the surname e.g. LINK #89
but other times don't e.g. LINK #466
and sometimes there's the jackpot of both religious and given name LINK #198

On www.irishgenealogy.ie you can search using Sr or Sister as the first name and there are some returns which may help but it is hit and miss.

What information are you seeking?  Is it the childhood etc of Sr Patricia or her whereabouts after the 1951 Obit.
