« on: Sunday 20 August 17 00:19 BST (UK) »
Hi.I am at a loss to find out how Francis (b.11/9/1831) got from Suffolk UK to Australia somewhere between 1848/9 and 1853 (marriage yr in Victoria,Aust.) He was apprenticed in the Merchant Navy 23/71846 and can't find anything about his movements prior to marriage. Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

1853 Vic BDM online index has
Francis CAVELL marrying Jane DONNE
Reg. # 1497.
(Vic birth registrations for their children has Frances Jane DONNE)

1897 Vic BDM online index has
Francis Theodore CAVRLL’s death registered #6916.
Parents recorded there as Geo CAVELL and Elizth (KING).

From the 1897 death registration, what information is given as to the question “how long in the colonies”?

Info on Vic BDMs can be very detailed … see the following thread

Victoria was still part of New South Wales until 1851, so perhaps you need to look for arrivals to NSW as well as to Victoria...  Also, perhaps he came as crew, rather than passenger, due to his Merchant Navy apprenticeship  :)

Thank you. I had an idea that he may have come to OZ as part of a crew and have already diligently searched all the links you provided to no avail so far. Will keep searching.

George Cavell married Elizabeth King in St Lawrence church,Ipswich ,Suffolk 29th dec 1820
Francis Theodore Cavell was baptised 21st Oct 1831 at St Matthew church,Ipswich - so 11 years later - presumably Francis had older brothers and sisters

Hi there,

I am somewhat confuddled by your reply to mine .... I had asked a question about his Victorian BDM death registration ....  searching the links I provided would not give the answer to that question ...   You need to have the actual document at hand  ;)

If he arrived as crew into Victoria you would most likely have to visit PROV in person and manually search the records as many are not indexed.  They have a guide here:

https://www.prov.vic.gov.au/explore-collection/explore-topic/transport/ships-crew-1852-1922

As JM has said, prior to this you need to look in NSW but he may also have originally arrived into one of the other States.  Did he continue to work at sea after he married?

Many sailors were "Beached" in Australia - if a sailor was troublesome and unruly - his shipmates would complain they couldn't work with him - so the captain would "Beach" him - he was rowed to a beach on a lifeboat and then left on the beach to fend for himself .
