The new facility at GRO that provides the maiden name of mothers in birth records is very nice!
However, I am still at a loss with the following problem:
Daniel Birmingham and his wife Mary have, according to the 1861 census Liverpool 8 children; from William born 1842 to Elizabeth born 1862. [RG09 2661 98 20] I can find the births of the last five children in the GRO, and this provides the maiden name of the mother: CATON. (The 1861 also shows a sister-in-law named Bridget Keatuy, a somewhat difficult spelling of Caton.) However, I seem to be unable to find the births of the first three children. Looking for the marriage of the parents, I find a marriage of Daniel Birmingham and Mary Caton on 23 May 1849, Liverpool. Thus, the first three children were either born out of wedlock or in an earlier marriage of Daniel. However, I seem to be unable to find the maiden name of the first three children through the GRO. Any suggestions to find this maiden name and the first marriage of Daniel are welcome.
