Simmonds or Newton
« on: Sunday 01 October 17 23:32 BST (UK) »
Researching Dorothy Simmonds who married Joseph Millward in December 1953. The entry on FreeBMD shows Dorothy listed as Simmonds or Newton. Why would it carry that second name? She was a witness to her sister's wedding as Simmonds and the notifier to her father's death as Simmonds.

But further to this, I kind find two births from the marriage where the mother's name is listed as Newton.

I have ordered the marriage certificate, but am impatient to know the answer and not sure the marriage certificate would explain it anyway.

Have you found her birth registered as Simmonds?
If not
Was she registered as Newton? - couple of possibilities
She was born before her parents married
She was not the daughter of Mr Simmonds, but took on his name when her mother married Mr Simmonds. Perhaps her mother was previously married to someone else?

Good find chempat - I wonder if 1939 register will note if she married a Newton and give the date of marriage  :-\

D Millward (Newton,Simmonds) 1926

Possible birth entry and her parents marriage

Sep 1926 Macclesfield
D Simmonds mmn Tomkinson   two other births 1928 & 1930

1925 Christ Church Macclesfield,
SIMMONDS   Harry
TOMKINSON

Edit - I see that Dorothy Millward died 1999 Newcastle Under Lyne dob 17 July 1926

I can't spot a Simmonds/Newton marriage  ???

Staffordshire BMD marriage index shows same

Civil Marriage (Newcastle-Under-Lyme)

MILLWARD  J   NEWTON   Dorothy
MILLWARD     J   SIMMONDS Dorothy
NEWTON     Dorothy   MILLWARD   J
SIMMONDS  Dorothy   MILLWARD   J

Remarriage
Where the lady is remarrying and both her maiden name and former married name are on the entry in the register, then both are listed in the indexes.

It is not possible to tell from the indexes which is the maiden name.

From all my other details that I have, I can be sure that her maiden name was Simmonds. That's if you can be 100% sure of anything in this research. 🤔

baldangel,

Are you saying that you know the children from the marriage, and they show the mother's maiden name as Newton, not Simmonds?
