1841 and 1851 census - Stoke Talmage and Dorchester
« on: Tuesday 02 August 05 21:55 BST (UK) »
I am researching a Butcher family who went from Stoke Talmage (or Talmadge), Oxfordshire, in the 18th Century to Dorchester, Oxfordshire in the early 19th century.  I have a Robert Butcher, whose son George was born at Dorchester in 1811 (It is believed that Robert was married to either an Ann or a Mary).  In a Post Office Directory for 1854 I have found another Robert Butcher, parish clerk at Stoke Talmage (I presume this is not the same man who was living at Dorchester).  I would really appreciate someone looking up the 1841 and 1851 census for both Stoke Talmage and Dorchester for anyone with the surname BUTCHER.  I believe both these villages had very small populations, so hopefully anyone with this surname would be easy to locate.  from Aurora.

Dear Debbie
Thank you very much for giving me this information from the 1851 census.  I think it will be a great help in trying to pinpoint various members of this Butcher family.  I appreciate your help very much.
kind regards, Aurora

Hi,

An ancestor of mine, Joseph Butcher lists his birthplace in the 1851 census as Stoke Talmage. He was borm c1818. In 1851 he was in Wolverhamption, with his wife Alice (nee Fletcher?) and children George Martin & Joseph. I feel sure there is a connection; could you let me know the remainder of the Butcher lineage from this part of the world please?

Ian

Hi Aurora ...

Chronologically, these are the last two marriages for any Robert BUTCHERs on the OFHS's Oxfordshire Marriage Index (1538-1837):

27 FEB 1797 - Robert BUTCHER to Mary BILLS at Dorchester
08 DEC 1836 - Robert BUTCHER to Sarah BANNISTER at Stoke Talmage

There are no later RB marriages on the index, and the one preceding 1797 is in 1769.

These look as if they both "belong" to you, and I would lay a bet that the first one is George's parents!

Hi Aurora,

Both of these Butcher's that Pennie lists appear in my family tree; if you would like to contact me perhaps we can assist help one another?

The one who married Mary Bills is my 4th great granduncle, and the one who married Sarah Bannister is my 3rd great granduncle.
