That dreaded "brick wall" is growing taller by the minute

Certainly the father David was born in 1801 and I suppose Scotland will have a myriad "David FLEMING" names but our versions died 30/05/1853 and 08/12/1904, father and son respectively.

William (Millmoor): I knew about his criminal background, 4 years penal servitude, and his records both at Parkhurst and Millbank Prisons reinforce the family details quoted.  It is trying to retrieve his life post-prison and 1861 that is proving slightly problematic.    I am in contact with a descendant who has had the same experience and hence my resort to RootsChat, knowing that unfailingly an answer will be suggested..........

Now knowing his 'past', my suggestion is, he either moved south or emigrated & possibly either flipped his name i.e. Fleming Campbell or changed his name?

Do you know if the middle initial 'C' for John & Catherine is for Campbell or other?

Do you know what the others middle initials B & M stand for?

I'm wondering if Campbell was indeed a middle name & used when it suited to hide his real identity?

I have just uncovered an Ancestry Public Member Tree for a David FLEMING, born 05/04/1801 died 28/02/1881, married to Jamima FLEMING..........there is a son Islay Campbell FLEMING born 1843 died 1844.

That's the tree I found the info. on 

They have nothing on Campbell apart from his birth which I'm wondering is true for Campbell being his middle name?

Licence granted 28 February 1861, for early release from Parkhurst prison'

As the licence was only granted 5 wks prior to the census (7th Apr) he possibly was transported?

He was actually released from Parkhurst Prison on 05/03/1861 and stated that his destination was to his mother, Jemima FLEMING, 11 Dalrymple Place, Edinburgh.   The Census took place on the night 7/8 April, so even allowing for travel in Victorian times he had plenty of time to reach Edinburgh!!

I realise he was in Edinburgh 1861 census night but...

He was out on 'licence' i.e. if he didn't meet the requirements of that curfew he may have ended up being transported 

Are you able to look at his baptism record for his correct name?

'Ilay' just doesn't seem right?
