Birth John Ansell c1759 possibly Whittlesford
« on: Sunday 10 December 17 13:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to trace the baptism of this man who married Mary Rumball of Whittlesford in that parish in !782. I think he was the son of William Ansell and Ann Kitson whose marriage I am also trying to trace.

Many thanks

David ;)

Hi

The marriage of William Ansell and Ann Kitson took place in 1721 - I think. In two records it says her surname is KITSON one other says KILSON.

Married by Licence 7 January 1721 at Cambridge All Saints. Both of the parish of Stapleford.

Unlikely to be John Ansells parents.

Hi Claire

m any thanks for that information, but I realised that I had jumped a generation, I am looking for the baptism of John  who I now believe was baptised in Great Shelford, whose father was I believe the son of William Junior and another Ann. Any help would be much appreciated.

Kind Regards

David :D

I can see the family you are looking at in Great Shelford c1760 - it looks like this William and Ann baptised a few children in Stapleford too as early as 1755. But I can't see a John using any number of variant spellings.

The only baptism I can find in the timeframe is this

John AMSEL bapt. 12 Jul 1761 son of John and Elizabeth, baptised in RAMPTON which is about 15 miles from Great Shelford.

These are only transcriptions from the parish registers so AMSEL could possibly be a corruption of Ansell.

Given John and Mary name two of their children William and Ann, it's possible the parents are the family you are looking at and given naming patterns were often used. I would have expected a John  or/and a Elizabeth would have featured if the Rampton birth was correct.

Remember these are only transcriptions, the parish registers may hold the baptism you need. One of William and Anns children's surname was transcribed as AMSWELL in Stapleford.

Hi Claire

Thanks for that advice, do you know if the Sawston records are online as that is where he died. I wondered if he had gone back to his roots as I have found missing relatives in that parish and that may be why I cannot find his parents William and Ann's marriage ?

Kind Regards

Not sure how many William Ansell's there are in Stapleford or Shelford but he married an ANN KING by licence in Stapleford 1750 (licence date 22 Jun 1750). William was a Yeoman.

In 1753 as a widower he married again in Stapleford by a licence dated 14 Sep 1753. He was a farmer and he married a HELLENE CORBY.

Yet all the children's baptism name a mother Ann :-\ - what is also interesting is a gap in the baptising of children , room there for a John ?

Joseph 1755 Stapleford
James 1757 Stapleford
Anne 1761  Shelford
Elizabeth 1763 Shelford
