Hi Rootschatters

I have a copy of a document, dated 1809, in which the writer signs C.P. after his name. It is in relation to swearing an oath on the veracity of evidence.

The writer states he is one of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace. I don't think he was a Lawyer or Barrister just a local Magistrate. His main occupation was farming.

It is a Canadian document but I believe Upper Canada followed the British legal system.
I would have expected the initials J.P. but it is definitely C.P.  Any ideas?

Probably "Commissioner of the Peace".
