Edminsons/Taits Berwick Upon Tweed
« on: Friday 05 August 05 02:54 BST (UK) »
Hello, I am seeking information regarding the lineage of Edminsons from Berwick Upon Tweed,Spittal/Tweedmouth areas. Catherine Edminson married James Tait abt 1851 at B.U.T. Catherine and James had  ten children,James, Richard, Stephen, Elizabeth,Ruth(My gr grandmother who married Alexander Watson Borthwick),Thomas, Robert (who marrried Jane Jamieson),Margaret, Mark,Jane.

I believe that Catherine 's father may have been  Stephen Edminson and her mother was Elizabeth??. Catherine Edminson died  28 Nov 1899 in Featherbed Lane B.U.T.,NBL,ENG
I have pored over the 1841/1851/1861 Census and have the details of the 1881/1891 Census. Can anyone help me with the 1901 Census for James Tait Please. Somewhere I believe I have an article relating to a Stephen Tait, railway employee who viewed a blimp over England during WW1. ndpaton

Hi
You obviously have date and place of birth for James Tait.  It would help to know that information if anyone is to search the 1901 for you so do post it.  You do realise that you can search the index free on www.census.pro.gov.uk ?   Remember to put in all spelling variations.
Have you looked for the marriage on FreeBMD?   If you have failed there then it is worth a look at the paying sites.  www.1837online.com is one and with luck you will find it quite quickly as you know the approximate date.

Thank you Sillgen for your help . I should have realised my error as there are many James Taits. They were reputedly border reivers way back in the 1600s according to the book"Steel Bonnets" which has been excellently researched.
James was repudedly chr 12 Aug 1827 Berwick Upon Tweed and parents ,Samuel Tait and Jane Alexander. Regards ndpaton

Hi, I wonder if you're trying other spellings of the name Edminson as well.  I have Edmensons in my tree which I've found as Edmundson or Edmonson at times, though never an Edminson as yet.

I believe the name came originally from Edmundstone or similar, and was from Scotland, though I have no proof of that as yet.  It may be of some help in your research though.

regards,

A Jane Edminson from Berwick lived in my house in Jesmond, Newcastle at the time of the 1901 cesus. She was widowed by this time, and had a son and 3 daughters. She was 65 years old- does this match up with your information? I am also interested in the family that used to live here- hope to hear from you,

To ATVe

That Jane Edminson (born Tait) was my great-grandmother. I have found no link to the Taits or Edminsons mentioned earlier in the thread. At the current count, I have 24 spellings of Edminson and similar - many people have different spellings in different records.

I have a Catherine Edm* in the 1851 census:

Neil thats amazing! I have been interested in the house's (now called the Porte, previsouly Ormidale) history for a while, but to actually hear from a relative is excellent- it makes it seem real, not just census records.

I'd just love to know anything about her or their family. All I know is from the census, i'm really interested.  :)

Further to my last reply I have now come across an Edminson spelling in my tree in 1881, if I have it right. She was a Hannah Edminson, visiting her son in law David Brewis  and her daughter Hannah, previously Hannah Burrell Edmenson. Another mystery, as I have no idea where the Burrell comes from.  Of course, having a Hannah with a mother called Hannah, both of the right age and place of birth, proves nothing.  It was a common name.

Looking at nmcdonald's lists of names I do wonder if they refer to the same person. Not because of the spelling of the surname, which can very enormously,  but because everyone else on the list is different. Personally I would be very doubtful that it's the same girl just because she has the same name as is about the same age.

I run across this kind of thing all the time.

good luck
