While researching my lady's sea-faring ancestor, I have often found myself wanting detailed knowledge of life on the ocean waves in Victorian times. I have wanted to know about things like ship/ship and ship/shore communications, voyage times, typical cargoes from far-flung lands etc.
I have just found many volumes of "The nautical magazine and naval chronicle".
https://www.google.co.uk/search?tbm=bks&hl=en&q=nautical+magazine+and+naval+ChronicleA few sample chapter headings from one volume:
On finding Time and Latitude
Tropical costume of Men of War Seamen
Improvements in ships and steam vessels
Directions for the Yungkeang or Ningpo River
On the muscular power of seamen
Wool Cargoes
Nautical Observations on a Voyage to the Gold Coast
Something for everyone!
