Portessie

Does anyone know why addresses in Portessie are just a number eg. 51 Portessie or 64 Portessie on census forms. Also the same person sometimes appears to have moved house or has the numbering just changed.
I am looking at census forms from 1871 to 1911

I've just checked maps of Portessie surveyed 1867 and 1902 via http://maps.nls.uk. There doesn't appear to be any street names in the small village. Which means the houses would just be identified by a number in the village. I've seen similar in other fishing villages of the time in Scotland such as Auchmithie in Angus. Street names appear to be a much later feature here.

Thanks, I thought that might have been the case & presumably when the same household has a different address number it could have been that more houses had been built and they were renumbered.
