I've just checked maps of Portessie surveyed 1867 and 1902 via
http://maps.nls.uk. There doesn't appear to be any street names in the small village. Which means the houses would just be identified by a number in the village. I've seen similar in other fishing villages of the time in Scotland such as Auchmithie in Angus. Street names appear to be a much later feature here.
