Hi,

Rufford Abbey was 'extra paraochial' that is it wasn't part of any parish but answered directly to the Bishop.  The status seems to have remained after the Reformation as the Abbey still had its own chapel.  It makes research in that area quite difficult even into the later 19th century as the census can say a person was born at Rufford but that does not give you much clue as to which of the nearby churches the family used for the child's baptism. Having said that the Savile family who owned the abbey in the 19th century used Bilsthorpe church.  I found when I was doing the family history of a friend whose family came from that area that I had to look at Bilsthorpe, Eakring, Edwinstowe and Wellow church registers.  Rufford is now, I think, offically in Edwinstowe parish.
