new info on? g'dads medal card?(completed thanks)
« on: Saturday 06 August 05 00:25 BST (UK) »
hi,hoping to get some help with this medal card which i think just may be my g'dads, reason i am a little doubtful is that i recently found his certificate of service which  does state that his regiment was the 3rd northumberland fusiliers and that he enlisted on the 4th of august 1914 and was wounded at la bassée in august 1915, however the medal card  seems to point to him having been wounded in august 1914.i know he was gas poisoned but don't know if thats the wound referred to by the medal card. help!!before this post turns into a novel. :-\

the name is not on his certificate of service which i have though.[/color]

I have just noticed what appears to be more letters and numbers under the word 'trans'.can some  kind soul with better eyesight than me make them out?
and would anyone know what they mean?

Hi Anne

Isn't the qualifying date the date that he actually entered the war/arrived overseas?

thanks mack, thats a lot more help than you might think.
i do know he was in the reserves but did'nt know it was from the 3rd battalion,
until recently i did'nt even know his regiment in world war 1.he was in the army
sometime before his marriage in 1909  but on his marriage cert he was a labourer.
i am convinced now the card is the right one.g'dad john is hard work even though i
know a fair bit about him in dublin and have marriage and death certs and know he
is buried in a family grave in mount jerome cemetery dublin, his army papers are the
hope of finding an exact birthdate for him so i can trace his family to a specific place in wales,
as i know thats where he and his family were until he was 14 years old.
here i go again writing novels when all i really want to do is say thanks for the info',only thing i
could think of for the letters hs was hospital ship!  regards,Anne

hi manmack and casalguidi,
this medal card is now confirmed as my grandad john's.

he joined the northumberlands in 1904,served in south africa for over 2 years
also france twice and 'home' (leeds) and home (dublin.)
thank you for your replies and help to understand the medal card.
