Newcastle Evening Chronicle look up please if anyone has time
« on: Friday 16 March 18 20:39 GMT (UK) »
If anyone is going to the Library at Newcastle (no rush, its waited a while so a while longer isn't going to matter)
I'd be grateful if they could check to see if the following death notice entry in the Newcastle Evening Chronicle is readable on the microfilms.  Though this year is recently added to the database in British Newspapers Online (available via  FindMyPast) its so badly scanned that its unreadable unless, like me, you know what it 'should' say and I'd really like to ask the Library (and pay them) for a copy.

Newcastle Evening Chronicle, 12th October 1956, page 28 (of 32) column 3
Deaths
Henry, Gateshead, 14 Old Durham Road. on the 11th, aged 64 years Christina Brown (nee Nairn), beloved wife of Albert. etc etc

If someone can tell me its readable on the microfilm, I can email the library and ask if they can provide a copy. Am more than willing to pay for it (though am hoping its not going to be the £30 research fee!)

Thanks

Boo

Hi Boo,

This is what I can make out:

'HENRY.  Gateshead, 14, Old Durham Road, on Oct. 11, aged 64 years Christina Brown (nee Nairn), beloved wife of Albert.  Cremation West Road on  Monday at 1.3(5?) p.m.; leaving residence at 1 p.m.  Friends please meet at Crematorium.  Deeply mourned.

The print could be better but then again this is not the worst I have come across when researching.  It is readable.

I have asked the staff how much they would charge for sending a copy.  Unfortunately, this would be £25 - even though this would be a straightforward search. :-\

Best Wishes  :)

Hi Boo,

Could this possibly be Christina's memoriam notice?

Evening Chronicle - Friday, October 11, 1957

'HENRY - (Gateshead), Treasured memories of dear mother died Oct. 11, 1956  God gave us memories that there might be roses in December.  Loving daughter Mary, Jack, Muriel, and Olwyn.'

Again, print not brilliant but this is readable when magnified.

What a lovely notice! :)

I know you have not asked for this and this may not be Christina but I thought it would be worth looking for a follow up memoriam too, while I am here.  If it is Christina's notice, hopefully this will be a nice bonus for you.

If you want the staff to send both notices it should still only be £25 an hour which is their minimum search fee apparently.  When you mentioned £30 - are you thinking of Tyne and Wear Archives as that is their usual hourly search fee?

Best Wishes :)

Thank you RTL, that is very much appreciated, as always.

I've just checked the online database and the Memoriam notice is again included, but too badly scanned to be readable properly. It is the Christina I am looking for, so I am really pleased you took the time to look for me, its definitely a bonus.

The £25 charge is outside my current budget (and yes I was probably thinking of TWAS when I said £30, but even TWAS, given the date and page number would treat this as a copy request rather than research) so unless I can travel to Newcastle and get them for myself, I'll make do with the transcriptions you so kindly have provided.

Thank you again.

Boo

You are welcome Boo!

I don't blame you.  I think £25 is an exorbitant price - especially for such a straightforward look up. :-\

I think this is a false economy on behalf of research centres such as the library - they must be doing themselves out of a lot of business. :-\
