Help reading an Occupation on 1901 Census
« on: Wednesday 28 March 18 03:15 BST (UK) »
Hi all

can someone please tell me, or at least guess, what the job description is. The person is Frank Fisher 1865 - 1905. I know that when he married he was listed as a soldier but on some of his kids marriage certs he is also listed as a postman (He was also listed as deceased on their marriage certs).

Fisher - Australia, England
Redhead - Australia, England
Banks - Australia, England
Offord - Australia, England
O'Dwyer - Ireland
Thompson - Australia
Mitchell - Australia, Ireland
Dinte - Australia, England, Poland

What it looks like is Copper Turner (projectiles worker

Looks as if 'lead'? has been crossed out, (and possibly initialled.)

Would that make sense?  Might be a good idea to give a slightly larger clip so we can compare how the person writes his/her letters.  The 'T' could be an 'S' maybe but then I wouldn't know what the word would be. ;)

I presume the census is in UK as we didn't have census as such in Australia in that year - or did we?  :-\

Thank you

I recognised the Projectiles as it was listed further down on the census for another person, but the rest was a bit hard to read.

Would it have still been with his military work?

Sorry - I went back and added a bit to original post - I have a bad habit of doing that.

I don't know - but some bullets/shells had copper 'noses didn't they - I have visions of copper nosed bullets.

Not sure.   :-\

Edit to add.    Just googled copper turner projectiles . . .  try it and you will see.  ;)

I'm going to suggest that the lower middle word is 'band', as in 'Copper band Turner', ie. a role in the production of shells.

Edited to add: Google "copper band turning"  (with the quotation marks)

Thank you for your help

I thought the word might have been Hand, but band makes more sense. Im going to go google both and see but if he was in the military, it would make sense. :)

Wiggy: did you still want a slightly larger clip with the names to do a comparison on the writing?

Remember the quotation marks around copper band turning, with them you will get back several hits about munitions / shell production, without them you will get back all sorts of nonsense about bracelets etc.  :)

I also see references in old newspapers to 'copper band turner' and 'copper band turning', all relating to shell production.
