Hi Keith, it is hard to tell what he is holding, could be a letter, but not sure. The curled page is unusual. I would imagine it meant something to the man when the photo was taken, but almost impossible to say now.

Thanks Pat - my 2 main 'suspects', one was a carpenter & the other a baptist minister subject to getting a date for when the photo was taken. Do you agree with others that he looks around 75 years old?

Hi Keith, I'm dreadful at guessing ages, though I would say yes, between 70 & 75. It is difficult when they have whiskers and moustaches, but his hair does appear to be very grey.

My guess would be 1880s Keith. Age approximately  early mid 70s. I'm wondering if this could be an older Joseph Stevens?

I hadn't actually thought of him Carol - Joseph snr was born 1815/6. The general estimate for this man's age seems to be 75 which would date the photo to around 1890. Do you think he looks like an older version of this photo taken (I believe c1877)? By this time he was a Baptist Minister which might tie in with what he has in hand (preacher's card?)

I noticed that the back of the photo says that the business has been trading for over 30 years & according to what I can find Robert Hellis started the business at 13 Silver Street in 1870. Would I be right in assuming that the photo must date from 1900 or later?
