This man is I believe a relative & in order to try & work who he is can someone please help me with:-

a date range for when the photo was taken - I believe Hellis & Sons began trading under that name from 1887

the man's age - 65?

Also if possible it would be great to try & sort out the dark shadowing around his eyes

Thanks
Keith

My try, with original and sepia versions.
Can't help with the date, Keith, but I'd estimate his age as slightly older, perhaps 70 + or - 5 years.

Are you able to post the back of the photo complete with corners please Keith.

Robert Hellis  Father I think) died in 1895 - so presumably before that unless they were using up old card stock.

There is something rather odd about this photo - it looks as if it has been sharpened or over enlarged - or something.  One of the experts will know better than I, but something very odd.

Wiggy

Just for interest . . .  this is just a small example of why the daters ask for backs.

Booth, Bruerton, Deakin, Wilkes, Kimberley

Gaunt (Yorks)
Percy, Dunning, Hyne, Grigg, Farley (Devon, UK)
Duncan (Fife, Devon), Hugh, Blee (Cornwall)

Agree with Peter, 70+ years, could be closer to 80.

I have gone back to my cousin who sent me the image Wiggy. She does not have the original but thinks that another cousin may have so I have asked to see if I can have the back of the photo. I asked about the image I was sent & she said her son had 'sharpened' it so that she could see better what the man was holding in his hand! In the meantime I'm attaching a pdf which includes the image she was sent before sharpening.
