Henry Edwin Clark and Ann Maria Newman
« on: Saturday 07 April 18 10:55 BST (UK) »
Hello,
My great grandmother, Bertha Ada Clark appears to have had 11 brothers and 11 sisters (23 children).  I know they had alot of children back then, but I want to check if this is correct.  The information I have is:-
Father:  Henry Edwin Clark b 29 April 1844 - Middlesex
Mother:  Ann Maria Newman b 22 April 1845 - Middlesex
married 25 December 1861
children listed as:-
Frederick Giles Clark - 1862 - 1918
Ernest William Clark - 1862 -
Emma Ann Clark -1862 -
George Samuel Clark - 1864 - 1939
Julia Emma Clark - 1866 - 1932
Samuel Clark - 1867 - 1939
James Clark - 1867 - 1869
Harry Clark - 1868 - 1949
Henry Edwin Clark - 1870 - 1958
Kate Clark - 1871 - 1957
Ann Maria Clark - 1872 - 1950
Frederick Clark - 1875 -
Jane Clark - 1875 - 1950
Florence Clark - 1877 -
John Clark - 1877 -
Bertha Ada Clark  *** my ancestor - 1879 - 1857
Clara Maud Clark - 1880 - 1969
Minnie Clara Clark - 1882 - 1967
Edith Clark - 1883 - 1932
Emily Beatrice Clark - 1883 -
George Clark - 188 - 1942
Adelaide V E Clark - 1886 -
Arthur V E Clark - 1886 -
Albert Ernest Clark - 1889 - 1951

From looking at the dates it could be that several of the pregnancies were twins, and that some didn't survive.    Just wanting to find out if the information I have is correct - as that is a LOT of children!

Thank you in advance

Wendy

Have you checked the birth registrations on the GRO website which give mothers maiden surname
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp
Census information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Thanks for the tip - Clark is a pretty common name, but obviously the mother's maiden name has to match!  Will try that  :)

Can't see a Frederick Giles Clark in 1862 or a Julia Emma but you have 3 listed for 1862 so unless they were triplets  :o I would suspect at least one is not your family!

Have you looked at the 1911 to see how many children they had?

Excellent suggestion - there are a lot less than 23 which should save a bit of work  :D

1871 - 4 children
1881 - 9 children
1901 - 4 children

I would start with the 9 as that gives the largest amount.
