Many thanks for the confirmation at least I now have a correct dob for her - still no trace of her birth being registered at yet but I'll keep looking!

There are two entries on the London, England, Workhouse Admission and Discharge Records on Ancestry which are interesting.

One is for the admission:
Hester Garrett
Admission Age:   26
Says "pregnant"
Admission Date:   12 Oct 1889
Admission Place:   Kensington and Chelsea, Chelsea, London, England

Other is for the discharge:
Just says "at own request".

Discharge Date:   14 Oct 1889
Discharge Place:   Kensington and Chelsea, Chelsea, London, England

Thank you so much for your help - and everyone else who have replied.

It does look very promising so I will order a copy of the birth certificate and hope it fills in some gaps for me.

If this is my Jessie then her mother Esther may not be the daughter of Thomas Garrett and Elizabeth Workman as I had thought as if she was 26 when she was in the workhouse that would give a dob of around 1863 - then it will be back to the drawing board.  Although I can only find a Hester Garrett born in 1860 in Tetbury

I wouldn’t get too hung up on age precision - variation within a few years is so common in 19th century records as to be normal.

I agree and you can always check her father’s name through her marriage certificate.

Hi,

I have a copy of her marriage certificate which shows her as Jessie Frances Etherington and her father as Frederick Etherington. 

I have ordered a copy of what may be her birth certificate so it will be interesting to see if there is a father named :-)
