Info about a WW2 solider
« on: Monday 07 May 18 14:14 BST (UK) »
Hey guys!

Im looking to try find out some information e.g. service number about my Great Grandfather who fought in WW2. I've got some information here if that helps;

Name - Alfons Stolarski (Later changed to Alfons Baron)
Birth Place - Poland around Beuthen (Stollarzowitz)
DOB - 1926
Enlisted in the Army in scotland
Regement - Polish paratroopers (Don't know the exact regiment)
Served in - Operation Market Garden (I believe Arnhem)
After the war he returned to scotland and lived in Prestonpans

This is all the info i really have and I would love to find out more. If anyone could point me in the right direction of where to look for his service number etc that would be great. I've tried looking through Military record but due to me not knowing to much i didn't find anything!

Kieran :)

Hi Kieran,

Records for Armed Forces personel serving after 1920 are still held by the MOD.
This is info about applying for those Service Records .

In Brief:- If the person is still alive then only they can obtain their records (without charge), their spouse, (or parents if no spouse) can obtain the records also without charge but will need to supply a copy of the person's Death Cert. For anyone else it will cost £30, a copy of the Death Cert. plus patience.
There is a restriction on the amount of information supplied to non NOK for 25 yrs after date of death.

A Cert. is NOT required if the person died whilst still serving.

Regards,
Malcolm.

Hey Malcolm,

I'll have a look through those records to see what I can find!

My grandfather died about 12 years ago and so did his wife so would the NOK be the eldest son still living?

regards,
Kieran

Hi Kieran,
The link tells you how to obtain the records, it is not the records themselves.

As far as I know it is anyone in the immediate family. i.e. any child. not necessarily the eldest.
The forms have categories of people considered NOK and it is considered to be a living person in the earliest of those categories, from spouse/civil partner, child, grandchild, parent, sibling, nephew/niece, g'parent or other.

Regards,
Malcolm.

i used this service and it does work but as pointed out does cost a bit and takes a month or so. I would try to find a forum for his regiment and they will probably be able to get the service number [thats what i did]

The restriction only applies if one does not have the consent of the NOK for the release of the full records.
