Kirkby Mallory
« on: Thursday 10 May 18 17:29 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I discovered yesterday that I have eight consecutive generations of women on my maternal side who were literate; going back to 1766, which I thought was quite amazing.
I have cropped all their names from scanned marriage records, but I have one missing.

George James Wright married Matilda Bacon on 21st June 1859 at Kirkby Mallory.
Is there anyone who may be able to take a photo of the record for me?
I am cropping and pasting all the names I have to do a begat list which I'm planning to put in my Bible. It would be great to have them all.

I think it must be very unusual for a woman in 1766 aged about 21, to be able to write. I can't find her baptism so I don't know who taught her. Sarah Pye of Smisby in Derbyshire.

Thank you to anyone who may be able to help.

Matilda's marriage entry is available via FindMyPast - perhaps your local library has access (assuming you live in England/Wales) - and yes, she did sign the register.

Not sure I accept your theory that it was unusual for females in 1766 to be able to write!!!  :-* :-*
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!
If you don't ask the question, you won't get an answer.

I agree with you BumbleB  :)

I would think it was also quite possible that some people were able to sign their name and be unable to write anything else.

Hi
Have you considered this for Miss Pye?
John Pye married Ann Bosworth 13.2.1727 at Smisby
Possible daughter Ann married Samuel Hill 4.11.1755
and your Sarah 1766.

Anne d of John and Ann Pye of Repton Liberty baptised at Calke 1.6.1730
Isabel 23.4.1744   "        "   buried 27.11.1757

John Pye of Repton buried 26.4.1749
John bapt 7.8.1701 s of Thomas and Sarah Pye.
and daughter Elizabeth 25.2.1707.

Thomas's Will 1723 Esquire of  Southwood Repton in Lichfield wills index available to order  on Staffordshire name indexes site .
I can't spot a baptism for Sarah but the records in the area do seem quite patchy.

Ann Bosworth was an older woman bapt Repton 12 Aug 1694 to John  Bosworth
possible sisters  Mary 13.3.1716 , Elizabeth 20.4.1719 gives mother Anne
John married Ann Roberts 30.9.1690 at Repton
Ann w of John buried 6.9.1726 and John 7.5.1729.

There is also Bosworth family at Smisby- George and Ann.

Thank you all so much.
I really appreciate Ciderdrinker all your research for me.
I have found some further links since posting... back two more generations from Sarah Pye. I too thought that Sarah's parents were John Pye and Ann Bosworth and Ann's parents, Isaac Bosworth and Joan/Joanne Elliot. I shall do some research into the other suggestions you mentioned too.

I saw Thomas Pye's will for 1723 and I'll look that up the next time I have a session on Find My Past. Lichfield says it includes Admin papers and an Inventory of his goods but doesn't mention the actual will but Find My Past may have that. Being called Squire of Southwood, does make me think he had some standing in the community.

I hear what you are saying re people just learning to write their name for their marriage. Am I right in thinking that apart from Marriage Licenses, around the 1750-60's date, it would have been the latest for signatures to be on the registers, or did it vary from parish to parish on the format of the registers?

I really appreciate your kind responses. Thank you very much.
