Thorney Huguenots
« on: Tuesday 22 May 18 17:55 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone.

I'm wondering if anyone could look up some names on the Huguenot parish records for me please.

I have Jaques Flahau, and his wife Anne Lisy who were married some time before 1668 in/around The Thorney area. They had a son, also Jaques Flahau, among others.

Wondering if someone could find marriage/baptisms for Jaques Snr & Anne.

Many thanks

Paul.

Not looking at the originals but also at the same church at Thorney Cambridgeshire.
Marie d of Jaques and Jenne du Chattelet 24.6.1655
Marie 11.10 1657

So could they be parents or a first wife?

I have a small book called 'The River Makers' by Trevor Bevis which has interesting information about the Huguenots of Sandtoft and Thorney. It doesn't give any specific names at Thorney but states that the baptisms for Flahau (Flauhaut) ranged from 1657 to 1695. It also states that the earliest names are those who vacated Sandtoft for Thorney.

It is possible that Jacques was born in Sandtoft, from where many Huguenots migrated to Thorney. It doesn't have a baptism for him but there are some which may be the same family:-

Dec 3 1643 Isaac son of Jacques Flahau and Jeanne Chatelet
Oct 26 1645 Johan son of Jacques Flahau and Jeanne Chatelet

Jul 21 1646 Ester daughter of Robert Flahau and Maria Scanflair

This mentions a James Flahau born c 1645. My wife has a Huguenot ancestor who was Jacques, sometimes James.

His siblings were born in Sandtoft or Thorney

The French Church at Thorney first began to assemble in 1652, and I don't think there are any baptism records before 1654.

Belton is close to Sandtoft and Jacob, baptised on 10th September 1648, could be Jacques, given that his father is shown as Jocobi and Jeanne as Jana.

James is shown as Flashor on 18th Sep 1636, son of Jacobi and James?

Ann is Flashow in 1638.

The images of the baptisms at Belton can be seen on www.lincstothepast.com

The first is at the bottom of the left-hand page of -
Ann - https://www.lincstothepast.com/Records/RecordDisplayTranscript.aspx?oid=708578&iid=47988

The last is at the bottom of the right-hand page of -
Jacob - https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=GBPRS/LINCS/BELTON_IN_AXHOLME_PAR_1_2/0427&parentid=GBPRS/LINCS/BAP/00140540

The others are between those, together with many other Huguenots.

Owing to the vindictiveness of local fenmen, many families moved to Thorney. One of the founding families of the French church in Thorney was Flahay.

Hello,
Just googled looking for a copy of Trevor Bevis's The River Makers and found this thread.  I wondered if this link might help in your search for Flauhau.  There is an Abraham in Whittlesey which is where my Hairsigns settled after Thorney.

http://www.axholme-fhs.org.uk/files/settlers.pdf

This is a list of Wills of Settlers drawn up by Jo McCann on the Isle of Axholme Family history site

http://www.axholme-fhs.org.uk/

Also, in Bevis's book, The Persecuted, there are mention of Flauhau(t) baptisms at Thorney in 1657, 1695, to 1700 but no details

You can see the searchable transcripts of Thorney's French Church online on

https://archive.org/details/registerofbaptis17hugu/page/n11/mode/2up

However, the spelling of the surname needs to be accurate and I couldn't see mention of Flauhau(t) but put in Lisy and hundreds appear.  You might also wish to try the Canterbury records.

Hope this helps,
Sue
