Osgothorpe ... Any census 1841 - 71
« on: Monday 08 August 05 14:33 BST (UK) »
Hello!

I am a relative newcomer to family research and have hit a bit of a snag with one side of my research. I wonder if anyone could look up any John Osgothorpe (also spelled Osgathorpe and many other ways) in any census between 1841 and 1871. He was born around 1846 and the 1881 census gives his place of birth as nottingham but there doesn't seem to be a trace of him there. His father was William Osgothorpe but that is all I know.

I know there is an Osgothorpe family in Bourne and I am beginning to wonder if he may have been part of this ...

Any John Osgothorpes anyone can find may just be a clue ...?

Many thanks
Emma-Jane

Hello Geoff!

Thanks so much for looking ... oh dear a chimney sweep ...  ::) this lot just keep getting better and better! Nothing like meeting the ancestors to bring your feet firmly back down to earth!

If they are the only Osgothorpes anywhere around this area then I can now proceed to check out that John and try to establish if they are the 'ones' .

My deepest thanks again Geoff

If you think they're a possibility, I'd better give 1861

2317/71
Mast? St, Bourn
Charles OSGOTHORPE 34 Chimney sweeper- master emp 1 man, Nottingham
Elizabeth 41 Grantham
Ellen 14 Scholar, Colsterworth
James 13 Corby
Mary Ann 8 Scholar, Bourn
Frederick 6 Scholar, Bourn
George Henry 4 Scholar, Bourn

Don't shoot me cos the kids' names don't tally - I'm only the messenger!

Some burials at Bourne-
John OSGOTHORPE 4, 25 Feb 1855
Joseph 10, 25 Jan 1859
Sarah Jane 11 wks, 26 June 1860

One is tempted to think it may be the wrong family ...

Hi again Geoff!

I think you may be right, they are not my lot. They look like the same family and John is gone ... I guess he may be the John buried in 1855 - died young. That sort of rules out any of the Lincolnshire Osgothorpes then if they are the only family.

But hey, that is ok, at least it narrows down the search!

Thank you Geoff, your help and input is much appreciated :D

Very best wishes
