fb22 -- did William die in Scotland?
If so you could check his death certificate on Scotland's People website. You will need to purchase a few units but you could view the certificate on line.
It should give you his wife's maiden name, and father and mother's name. That may help find his baptism in the Parish Registers, assuming he was born before 1855 when Civil Reg commenced.
At the moment we don't know where he died or how old he was at death (if you know that -- it would help as it would give an approx birth year).
