Hi,
Spon Lane goes from West Bromwich to Smethwick and was a fairly long road in the 1800s with many pubs - cant remember how many exactly but sure I read 30 !!
try www.canals,btinternet.co.uk for info on the canal locks etc at Spon Lane and also www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/STS/WestBromwich for general info.

Hi Jake
sorry couldn't find anything that would help you but will bear it in mind and let you know if anything turns up when Im researching my Law family from the Spon Lane area.
My great grandfather died in West Brom workhouse 1901, aged 39 and his occupation was boatman of Oldbury, though he lived in Spon Lane. His father was a basketmaker who I think sold his baskets on the canals.
Happy hunting
