Nowt like a bit o' 'onesty!

While trawling through census returns looking for mistranscribed/missing ancestors I came across this family from South Emsall in Yorkshire. I had to smile at Harriet's relationship to the head of household!

Similar thing came up on another site I belong to when the woman's relationship to the head of the house was described as Mistress. Looking at records she was as well, as she had his child 3 months later!  ;D ;D

By coincidence, we were discussing something similar on an Ancestry thread on FB.*  The principal discussion revolved round whether someone referred to in the relationship column of the census as 'Mistress' was indeed the mistress of the head of the household.  I pointed out that in my FT I have an unfortunate woman shown as 'Concubine', and someone else following the thread said she had the same thing in her tree.  What surprised us was that both these women were in Ipswich, Suffolk.  I loved the other contributor's response regarding the Ipswich enumerator:  "What a judgy-pants he must have been!"   ;D

Funnily enough I did a quick search on ancestry & in 1851 one particular enumerator seemed to have a run of concubines! Interestingly some of the concubines were down as married, as were the heads of household; I suppose not necessarily to each other :)

In the example that Stan gives us, the woman appears to have the same surname as the man, is described as 'Wife' too.  So I do wonder how she can be described as 'Concubine' as her trade.  Unless of course the enumerator was another judgy-pants and knew more about the lady than we do.

My Huguenot ancestor was born in the mid 1720s and the register said his father's name and then said "his concubine" (In French) and her name. Several French men in the village had a concubine. It may have been more of a tradition in France.
