Yandell/Yendle/Yeandell help/request lookup in Bristol.
« on: Tuesday 10 July 18 16:38 BST (UK) »
I have been taking advantage of the recent free extended weekend of Ancestry UK and Irish records, and have come back to a brickwall that could very easily stop an atomic bomb as far as I'm concerned.

Rachael Yandell born about 1818 in (here it gets interesting) ...

1841 - Somerset, England.
1851 - St Phillips, Bristol.
1861 - Bristol.
1871 - Bristol.
1881 - Bristol.

Rachael married James Burge in Temple Church, Bristol in 1836, so unfortunately a year out from the records stating who the father of Rachael was. Their first child was named Robert Tuck Burge, so thought perhaps the Tuck may be a surname or somesuch. Rachael and James had many children and died in 1888.

But, for the life of me I can't find her baptismal record. I've looked through 'Pip n Jay:1813-1825 (lots of Yandells), Temple:1813-1828, Redcliffe:1813-1824, St John Bed:1813-1825' and all to no success. There exists lots of Yandells around, even going into Somerset and Gloucester, but no Rachael.

I was wondering if anybody can come up with a solution or offer advice on what would be the best way to break down the wall.

Many thanks.

Who were the witnesses to the marriage

William Corbett and Ann Burge.

Ann was the grooms mother.

Inspired by a recent WDYTYA episode, and looking over my DNA results which indicate I have a South Asian ancestor born roughly between 1710 and 1830, I thought throwing my net further out into my search I may come across something.

Using the online India Office Family History website, I put in Yandell and got just one hit for a William Yandell who worked as a shoemaker. If correct, I traced this William back to the 1851 census living in Temple, Bristol. His profession was Cord Winder.

William married an Ann Birt in December 1811 in Bristol, and looked to have had 2 children, Caroline and Elizabeth. No Rachael, though.

Is this just one big huge coincidence, that a Yandell who makes shoes has connections to East India Company from Bristol, or does this look to be the avenue that may help break down the wall of Rachael?

1841 census

Temple: (District where Rachael married)

District 20

Kings Buildings

William YEUNDALL (as spelt on Ancestry) - aged 69 - ShoeM (not born in County)
William ATKINS - 16 - ShoeM (not born in County) - not born in County
Eleanor BERREYMAN - 40 - (Ellen BURYMAN on the 1851 census) - F/S (not born in County)

---

Also William JEFFERIS and wife Elizabeth is next door 1841/1851 census - no sure if any connection

---

As William YANDELL is aged 79 in 1851 c 1772 - would have expected him to marry around the 1800's.

Presumably it should be Cordwainer  :-\

On the 1851 census it specifies 'St Phillips' - this must surely be St. Philip and Jacob, Bristol and from what I can find out it looks as if records for this church are only available on microfiche and held at Bristol Archives i.e. not available online.

However, you say you've searched these records already so not sure what else I can suggest.

Thank you to all who replied and helped.

I personally believe William is 99.9999% certain to be Rachael's father. Not only do the occupations and locations align, but a child of Rachael's went on to name her daughter Caroline. Was Caroline her favourite Aunt?

The search for the baptism goes on.
