Name:John Quinlan

Hello,
I am trying to get more details of the life of John James Quinlan, born 1868 in Launceston. son of William Quinlan and Margaret (nee McDonald).
The Fawkner burial record of 1942 is for a public grave, with 7 others (not related to him). It is for an 83 y.o. John Quinlan, suggesting he died alone and without funds.
He was alive in 1935 when his brother William died in Preston.
Beyond that, I don't know anything about him.
I would welcome any suggestions of record/websites to investigate, which may prove helpful in trying to research a bachelor who looks to have died alone.
Much appreciated.

Have you tried searching Trove?
https://trove.nla.gov.au/

I see there is an item probably about his parents  William and Margaret in 1858

I see that his birth was registered as John James QUINLAND in 1868 - parents: William Cornelius QUINLAND (groom) and Margaret nee McDONALD, as was sister Mary Briget in 1856, Margaret in 1863 and an unnamed male in 1865.

Modified to add:
And their marriage in 1854 - William QUINN (groom) and Margaret McDONALD

Also son Dennis QUINLAN (father Cornelius QUINLAN (groom) and Margaret McDONALD) in 1862.

As he signed with "his mark" each time, it's easy to see how the change in name could occur - but I mention it only so that it could be taken into account when searching.  :) )

Actually ... just looking at the death of John QUINLAN aged 83 in 1942 in Northcote, Victoria, the index has parents as Thomas QUINLAN and Mary nee DWYER, born in Mortlake.

So not your John QUINLAN?

Thanks, Maddys52.

Have been playing around on trove. No luck with John Quinlan but plenty with his his brother William, who looks to make at least one appearance per year in court.

"John QUINLAN aged 83 in 1942 in Northcote, Victoria, the index has parents as Thomas QUINLAN and Mary nee DWYER, born in Mortlake." This rules out the one buried in Fawkner, wrong parent sand brithplace for us. So it's back to the drawing board. Many thanks for your help.

I agree about the problem of a father who can't read or write. He had no way of checking spelling even if he knew it.

And thanks to you, majm,

He's not ours either, and you've helped eliminate another possibilty. Thank you for the suggestion.

The Quinlans are, like so many other families, anything but easy to track down.

Much gratitude.
