Info please on cemeteries and graves
« on: Wednesday 01 August 18 22:11 BST (UK) »
Hi quite confused on how the cemetery's work in Scotland. For example searching for someone who died in Lochwinnoch according to death cert, 1861, but evidently the cemetery didn't open till 1895. Does that mean he's buried there in a church yard? (How would I search) or possibly taken back to Greenock where he had lived previously. Previous to this the family all seem to be from Lochwinnoch where might they be?
Grateful for any advice 😃

I just googled    lochwinnoch cemetery

Lochwinnoch first grew up around a church established here by the monks of Paisley Abbey in the 11th century. A new church was built, possibly on the site of the older one, in 1729. There are graves dating back to the 16th century.

There's a comprehensive listing of Scottish cemeteries here, with details of locations, who is responsible for them, and whether transcriptions have been made etc:

http://www.safhs.org.uk/burialgrounds.asp

You can filter the list by any or all of county, parish and burial ground name.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson
