Marriage Announcement but no registration

I have found a marriage announcement in the SMH date 10 July 1920, but there is  no result in the NSW BDM index. Text below:

WELLWOOD-TRANSOM-June 29 1920 at St John's
Church, Darlinghurst by the Rev Canon Beck.

Mr Trevor Wellwood, second son of Mr. Robert Wellwood
of Brooklands, Hastings N.Z. and late of 1st Battery
AFA, to Miss Effie May Transom, youngest daughter
of the late Mr and Mrs. C. C. Transom of Sydney.

Is it possible for a marriage to happen without the registration?

In NSW, from the commencement of civil registration (1 March 1856) the responsibility for registering the marriage falls to the clergyman.
