Found relative in Lewisham Workhouse
« on: Tuesday 14 August 18 15:21 BST (UK) »
I have been catching up with London and Middlesex Records and found the following:

Does the Ethel Woodley in this record match the person in your tree?
London, England, Workhouse Admission and Discharge Records, 1764-1930 Lewisham

1910 October
7th Friday     D   Woodley Ethel  Housewife  C of E  20.2.1909 She was aged 19.

Why would she have been in there?

Her mother was Annie Emily Woodley nee Warren  and her husband was Edward Henry Woodley and they married in 1914 on 25 December. She was also in Lewisham Workhouse at some time but I lost the reference. She was born 18 Apr 1888 • Chalk Farm, married and died 17 August 1926 Mddx.

Would much appreciate any assistance.
Regards
Jan

I'm a little confused.  ;D You said she was 19 in 1910 and a housewife , but then that her parents married in 1914 ? I've looked through the entries and the only Ethel Woodley I can see was 19 months old and I can't see any reference to her being a housewife. This person can also be found on the 1911 census :https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XWRN-55Y

Sorry if I'm missing the point - it has been known !

The entry that mentions Cof E reads :

Ethel Woodley , illeg( illegitimate ) C of E 19 mos 20.02.1909. ( her date of birth ). Someone has transcribed her birth date as 1891 instead of 1909.

The whole entry was confusing, in fact there were two and funny dates.
So what would a baby have been doing in the workhouse and what would have happened to her?
Thanks

There are a number of workhouse records in Lewisham for an Anna Woodley & Ethel Woodley

Anna Woodley   1870   4 Feb 1913   Lewisham, Lewisham
Anna Woodley   1870   24 Feb 1913
Ethel Woodley   1909   4 May 1911
Ethel Woodley   1909   4 Feb 1913
Ethel Woodley   1909   24 Feb 1913

Anna Woodley   1871   28 Nov 1912   Lewisham, Lewisham
Ethel Woodley   1909   17 Jan 1912   Lewisham, Lewisham
Ethel Woodley   1909   3 Jun 1912   Lewisham, Lewisham
Ethel Woodley   1909   28 Nov 1912   Lewisham, Lewisham

I haven’t looked at all these records

Im guessing that perhaps Anna Woodley gave birth to Ethel in workhouse

This appears to be her birth entrymothers maiden name is blank so assume illegitimate

WOODLEY, ETHEL   -
