Josiah Woolley and family
« on: Friday 17 August 18 00:43 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to trace this family that seem to have moved back and forth between London and Leicestershire.

Currently this is what I know...

Josiah Woolley married to Susanna (do not know her last name and have not yet found a marriage for them)

They had the following children

Clarissa b. 1775 in St James, Westminster, London
Josiah b. 1777 in St James, Westminster, London
Samuel b. 1786 in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire  died sometime between 1813-1821 as his wife Lucy remarried in 1821 to a George Layfield.  I have not been able to find a death for Samuel anywhere so far.

Josiah died in 1799 in Middlesex.

I would like to know more about them if anyone has any leads.

Many thanks

The will is on ancestry, he is of Knightsbridge, St.Margaret Westminster, mentions son Samuel and wife Mrs. Wooley, probate 21 January 1799
admin by William Simson and William Abbott the younger

Are you sure you have the correct birth/and area for Samuel?

He obviously has a son Samuel  seems more likely to have been born Westminster than Leicestershire.
St James Westminster daughter Eleanor was baptized 31 December 1786*, Josiah' wife is now listed as Mary?.

This is the same church as Clarissa 1775 and Josiah 1777

Voters Lists and tax records from 1778-1796 all have him on Davies Street, Berkley Square.
1788 he is a Cabinet Maker, all other entries list him as a Broker, except the last 1796  where he is listed as Gent. No doubt retired by then.

There is a burial for Josiah Woolley at St James Westminster 18 September 1779, Of St George Hanover Square no age given possibly the son born 16 December 1777.
Also a Samuel Woolley buried 25 April 1788 at St James Westminster

Hi

Thanks for all the info.

Yes I am pretty sure about Samuel Woolley being born in Leicestershire though this information did come some another family member who had done the research so it may be false.

Samuel married a Lucy Oldham in 1807 • St Pancras, Kensington, London.

they then had 3 children all born in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire - which is where Lucy was from

I am open to the idea that Samuel may have been born in London instead

Thanks everyone :)

Samuel jnr is my ancestor.  He immigrated to New Zealand.

Now just need to find out more information about his father Samuel Snr and grandfather Josiah.  And possibly Josiah's parents.

It’s a pity that the Josiah Woolley who died in 1799 didn’t name his “dearly beloved wife” in his will.  It isn’t clear to me how many men of that name were living in London at the time.

There’s a marriage at St James’ Westminster on 30 January 1786 of a Josiah Woolley and Eleanor Fry, both of the parish.  Witnesses: Benjmn Danks; Rob Cole.
Ayr: Barnes, Wylie
Caithness: MacGregor
Essex: Eldred (Pebmarsh)
Gloucs: Timbrell (Winchcomb)
Hants: Stares (Wickham)
Lincs: Maw, Jackson (Epworth, Belton)
London: Pierce
Suffolk: Markham (Framlingham)
Surrey: Gosling (Richmond)
Wilts: Matthews, Tarrant (Calne, Preshute)
Worcs: Milward (Redditch)
Yorks: Beaumont, Crook, Moore, Styring (Huddersfield); Middleton (Church Fenton); Exley, Gelder (High Hoyland); Barnes, Birchinall (Sheffield); Kenyon, Wood (Cumberworth/Denby Dale)
