Smyth in Templeogue Everton in 1931
« on: Sunday 19 August 18 02:02 BST (UK) »
Hello, a beginner looking for a needle in a haystack here.
My father Joseph Smyth was born in the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin in 1/1/1931. Only the mother is listed on the Birth Certificate: KATHLEEN SMYTH from Templeogue Everton.  Her age isn’t on his birth certificate but he “was told” she was s young girl (maybe, or maybe not I guess)
My father was given to a Protestant Orphanage.
I am trying to find this Kathleen Smyth, my Grandmother, but haven’t been able to find her. I’ve looked at Ancestry.com Census records and have found a few Kathleen Smyth’s but none seem to be a good match.
Rotunda Hospital gave me no records or info through my FOI request.
Anyone have any pointers for me, or must I just accept it is impossible to research?

Did the Rotunda Hospital say why they couldn't give you any records or information?

Is your father still alive or has he died?

Do you know the name of the Protestant Orphanage your father went to?

Having a search about and found a place called Templeogue Nursery Rescue Home, Little Fortfield, Templeogue.  It was opened in 1910 and took in first fall maternity cases who remained for six months after the birth of the baby.  Payment when possible.  12 places were available and no limit on age.   I wonder if your father ended up there?

Just found a bit of info elsewhere:-

A large number of charitable organisations and institutions, some established in the 19th century but surviving into the mid to late 20th century, dealt with unmarried mothers. These included the Catholic Protection and Rescue Society of Ireland. The Magdalen Asylum in Leeson Street in Dublin catered for Protestant unmarried mothers, as did the Bethany Home in Rathgar, and the Nursery Rescue Home in Templeogue. Some of these were non-residential charities and they either fostered out babies or had them adopted.

If she was born by Apr.1911 then she should be in 1911 census. However, she might not have been born or been living in Dublin then, might be under Smith or Katherine, Catherine, Kate, etc.

Very interesting, Sinann, especially since both sons Sidney & Vincent seem to go by heir middle name and there's a daughter Elizabeth Kathleen.

This could be the father James Smyth- which mean they were still at that address in 1925-

I've lost the link now but the son George Fredrick was born Firhouse Templeogue, I still haven't figured out exactly where Everton is/was.
