Harriet Amelia VAUGHAN of ALNE - where buried
« on: Sunday 26 August 18 15:45 BST (UK) »

At St. Mary's Church at Alne in North Yorkshire is the following memorial.  My problem is that Harriet Amelia is also shown in the burial registers at Cadoxton, Neath.  Which is correct?  Is there any newspaper reference in North Yorkshire that could enlighten me?:

In this church lie the remains of JOHN ARTHUR /
who died aged iii months, AD Mdcccxxxv / and of
FRANCES MATILDA who died aged iiii years
AD / Mdcccxliii, the children of NASH
VAUGHAN EDWARDS / VAUGHAN Esq of
Rheola and Lanelay, Glamorganshire / and of
HARRIET AMELIA, his wife the daughter of
EDWARD / SWAINSTON STRANGWAYES,
Esq, of this place

The memorial, as I read it, doesn’t say that Harriet Amelia is buried at Alne, but simply names her as the wife of Nash and mother of the deceased children.

Perhaps you are right.  Your eye is more forensic than mine.  Thanks

Frances and John are the only Vaughan's that appear in the burial Register for Alne, John was buried 17 March 1835 and Frances 23 Dec 1843.  Her abode entry details actually say Alne of "Rhondda?" in Glamorganshire, Wales.

It was probably someone misreading 'Rheola'.  Everyone had heard of the Rhondda because of the coal but Rheola refers to a mansion in the Neath valley.  Incidentally, a year after Harriet's death in 1858 Nash V. E. Vaughan remarried to her sister Anna Maria.  Must be something alluring about the North Yorkshire girls!

It was me that misread it - I was looking at a scan of the original Register but now I can see that is Rheola!  ;)
