Pike family, Churston Ferrers, Devon
« on: Sunday 26 August 18 19:54 BST (UK) »
I’m trying to find parents and a baptism record for my 3 x Great Grandmother, Ann Pike. She was born around 1764 in Churston Ferrers, Devon, and in 1789 married Philip Hannaford of Stoke Gabriel.
I’d be very grateful for any help with this.

Hi

One possible scenario-

In looking at the marriages of anyone with the surname Pike in Churston Ferrers about the time of Ann's marriage there are three

Elizabeth Mitchell Pike
Susanna Pike
Mary Pearse Pike

They all married by licence as did Ann, on three of those marriages a P ? Pike was a witness (Ann's included) the other was witnessed by Philip Hannaford. So assuming they are all sisters I found Elizabeth M and Mary P's baptisms in Plymstock. Susanna (Winston) Pike was baptised in Churston Ferrers their father was Philip Pike.

In Plymstock he baptised a daughter Ann Laurence Pike on 30 Aug 1761.

Philip Pike married Mary Winston Pearse 12 July 1760 in Plymstock.

In the marriage Philip Pike was recorded as being from the parish of Churston Ferrers, the marriage was witnessed by a John Laurence and John Pike.

Hi

If you check the National Archives Discovery website

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

And look at Wills. If you check Country Court Death Registers 1796 - 1811, Philip Pike has an entry. He died in 1805. You are able to see a glimpse of the abstract in which his daughters are named  - Ann Hannafords being the first, and the others mentioned in my prior post.

Hi Claire, the information you found has been very helpful, I think I have tracked Philip Pike back further, there’s a baptism record for him on June 19th 1739 in Churston Ferrers, parents John Pike and Anne. Anne is likely to be Anne Laverence, and I’ve also tracked her further back through several generations to a Richard Laverence, born 1559. Can’t be absolutely certain, but am trying to find more records to confirm or rule out. As it’s an unusual surname (French, possibly?) I’m hoping I’ve got the right family.
The witness on the marriage record for Philip Pike and Mary Winston Pearse could thus be John Laverence rather than Laurence, I’ve noticed that the name is often mistranscribed thus.
Philip and Mary also had several more children, although not one named Philip as far as I can find, which is unusual, being the father’s name.
Just putting this here in case anyone else is researching this family. Many thanks again for your help!

Hi again

Upon looking at the PR of the marriage of Philip and Mary again,  the witness surname is indeed Laverence.

Philip Pike baptised a son Philip on the 8 May 1764 Plymstock.

I’d also suggest that the daughter Ann baptised in 1761 her middle name is probably Laverence too after looking at the register again.
