London Census Brickwall help please.
« on: Tuesday 11 September 18 15:57 BST (UK) »
I need help tracing  Matthew Lewis Vaughan Davies 1861 1871 1881 Census records.
He was born 17 Dec 1840 at Plas Tanybwlch, Rhydyfelin , Aberystwyth then Cardiganshire.
He appears aged 6 mths on 1841 census  for Llanychaiarn, Cardiganshire.
1851 aged 11 Pupil.at Bedwardine School.Worcester. I know he went to Harrow  and trained in Law
Presume he went to London to practice. NO TRACE  on 1861 1871 1881 Census
On 11 Dec  1889 while a resident at 13 Maddox St.London and a JP by Occupation he marries at St George's Hanover Square, rich Widow Mary Maple Jenkins nee Powell of 17 Hyde Park Gardens.London.
I have them both on 1891 1901 1911 Census records at 17 Hyde Park Gdns
Would love to find his whereabouts on those missing 3 Census but am not very good at searches.
Hence plea for your expertise.
It is known he travelled around Europe in his Youth so he may have been out of UK on Census night but unlikely probably only went in summer holidays.
His Widowed Mother Emma Davies aged 67 appears on 1871 Census at 13 The Promenade, Cheltenham
Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

In the  Cardiff Times 14 November 1874 there is an article where Matthew L V Davies of Tanybwlch near Aberystwyth was a nominee for the post of Sheriff for Cardiganshire.

Do you know where she was in 1861?

Was Matthew a bachelor when he married in 1889?

No idea where he was in 1861 and was a batchelor when marrying  in 1889.

He did become  High Sheriff of Cardiganshire as his Father did previously.

Cardiff and Merthyr Guardian, Glamorgan, Monmouth, and Brecon Gazette 15 November 1873
"of Tanybwch near Aberystwith"   I presume this is Tan Y Bwich
But, I haven't managed to find that place in the 1871 census

Army and Navy Gazette 09 March 1861

Thanks everyone for your finds so far.
Plas Tanybwlch is where we now live since 2016 hence my interest in researching former residents.
Matthew was born here in 1841 his Grandfather was in  the 31st Foot and  involved in the capture of St.Lucia and Cape Town then in India in the 31st Foot alongside Wellington then in the Penninsula Wars again with Wellington . As Lt Col  of 31st he captured 2 French Eagles  and  the City at the Battle of Salamanca his  bravery led George 111 to authorise the word "Salamanca" to be included on the Regimental Colours.
Matthew was presumably in London in 1871 and his Mum in Cheltenham and Tanybwlch Mansion rented out to a  Capt Charles E  Hopton and his Canadian Wife  2 Sons 4 Daughters & 5 Servants.  I Have copies of all Census records for Tanybwlch 1841 to 1911 except 1861 which apparently were lost for this Parish only. This Mansion became Matthews  2nd  Summer home after marrying in 1889 and  always at 17 Hyde Park Gdns on Census Night leaving Caretakers here on Census night.  He  appears to have retired here in 1930 after his Wife"s Death in London. He greeted Prince George at our front door the Queens Father after he landed his plane in the field below in 1933 . Matthew died here in 1935. Trying to find him.in those missing years. He was elected High Sheriff of Cardiganshire in 1875
