Baptism
« on: Wednesday 26 September 18 08:38 BST (UK) »
Hello
Thanks in advance for any help
I am trying to trace the baptism of my GGM. Pamela Julia Martin
She was born 1859 in Colchester Essex. Her mother's name was Susannah Martin. Susannah was unmarried at the time of Pamela's birth.
The civil reg of her birth is ...  GRO Reference: 1859 M Quarter in COLCHESTER Volume 04A Page 267
but I would love to know if and where she was baptised.
She married a James Watson in St Martin's Church, Colchester in 1878.

Hello Lynda - Welcome to RootsChat

I was looking for the christening of Pamela and checked the 1878 marriage.

The only "Martin" & "Watson" marriage in 1878 was the following:

 - St Martin's Colchester September 1st, 1878 between ...
Groom: James David Beresford WATSON, full age, a bachelor & Corporal in 27th Reg. (son of William Francis WATSON - a Clerk)
Bride: Pommella Julia MARTIN, age 19, spinster, dau of David Martin (Engineer)
(she signed as "Pommella … ")

(further info available on marr cert if req'd)

Are you sure this lady was Pamela's mother?

EDIT … OHHH silly me
I confused Pamela and her mother  ::)

She either changed her name or it's written incorrectly on her marriage cert

POMMELLA JULIA is actually PAMELA

I see Susannah was noted as "Unmarried" on 1861 census.
Have you found her birth/baptism?

It's not uncommon for someone to make up a name of their "father" on a marriage cert but it might be worth checking for a David Martin just in case.

Welcome to rootschat

How do you know that Susannah was unmarried? (do you have Pamela's birth cert?)

The GRO index does not list a mothers maiden surname on her birth entry so it could be assumed she was illegitimate

The name Pamela often turns up in variant forms in 19th C records - Pamelia, Pomelia etc.  They seem to have been used interchangeably.

By 1871 Susannah has married David Pitcher who was an excavator.
Seems to me that she has put him down as David Martin, her Father a Engineer on the M/C.

David Pitcher is living nest door to Susanna in 1861.

Also looks to me that Pamela Julia Martin is under Julia Hill age 12, Daug of James/Sarah Hill in 1871 Census.
As you know Sarah was Susannahs sister.
