9th Battalion Machine Gun Corps (Infantry)
Son of Robert and Nellie Fenn, of 9, Orchard Place, Faversham, Kent

Sidney is my great uncle and was killed in action in the Ypres Salient on his 24th birthday, born in Faversham, Kent, England on the 2 October 1894. Before the outbreak of war Sidney was a Footman in Chelsea and had served in the London Regiment before joining the Machine Gun Corps. Sidney had seven brothers and sisters including my grandmother Dorothy. Her twin sister Daisy gave birth to a boy at the end of October 1918 who was named in memory of their brother.

The 9th M G Battalion was formed on 1 March 1918 from M G Coys. of the 9th (Scottish) Division. In action at Battle of the Lys 7-29 April 1918 and the Advance in Flanders September-October 1918.

The Fifth Battle of Ypres, also called the Advance of Flanders and the Battle of the Peaks of Flanders is an informal name used to identify a series of battles in northern France and southern Belgium from 28 September through 2 October 1918.
