Interesting family story. Why would a Colonel be on sentry duty? Have you found any records of his army service?

This was what my mother was told I don't know more than that.

No I haven't.  I am not sure where I should look for these.

Any advice appreciated.

My mother was told that her g grandfather was as ship's captain. He was a boatswain.

My first reaction was that "colonel" was a mistranscription of "corporal".

From posts on another thread it looks like this Edward was working as an agricultural labourer at the age of 75+ in Frodesley in 1841 so the story about him losing his legs in army service doesn't seem right. http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=796860

The "regiment of Earl of Powys" could be either the Montgomeryshire militia or the Shropshire militia.  Various Earls of Powis were Colonels (an honorary rank) of those regiments.
