Herts electoral roll

I’ve been struggling to find a date of death for my great grandfather (only recently discovered who he was).

I know he was alive in 1954 as he appeared on the Islington electoral roll.  He was living with his wife.

I’ve found no record after this.  His wife died in 1960 and her death was registered in St Albans.  I wonder if they moved to Herts, if she moved to Herts following his death, or perhaps it’s a wild goose chase.

They were both born in 1892.  She was born Mildred Violet Dorothy Barnes.  He was Francis James Hughes.  (They married on 24/03/1913.)

From the Herts website it appears you have to go in person to check their electoral roll.

Is anyone going there?  Would they mind checking for either of them?  If there’s any trace I’d like to know the address(es) and who else was at the same address.


(I’ve used various key phrases to check the British newspapers to try to get a lead.  I’ve not found any trace of a grave or death for him.  No trace in probate records either.)

Any other ideas welcome.

To check the electoral roll for that period you have to have an address.

If it’s not a daft question, how would you trace an address?

It's not a daft question but unless more info is known (documentation etc) - you can't.  From 2002, electoral registers are online and searchable by name but prior to then - it's virtually impossible without an address

Who reported Mildred's death and is she shown as a widow?  If she is - that would narrow a death down between 1954-1960

Francis's full birthdate is shown on the 1939 register entry when they were living in Middlesex.  I can't give it here due to restrictions on that type of info.

Did any of their children emigrate?  If so - could he have gone to live abroad?

You would need to get her death cert and find out if he was the informant.
That would give you an address to start with.
If not maybe the person knew her well enough to know if she was wife of Francis or widowof him.

Looks like I’m treating myself to her death cert.  (I wanted to avoid that as she wasn’t my great grandmother.)

What’s the protocol when your enquiry moves from one county or city to another?

I forgot to say, I’ve only found one surviving child so far.  He was Francis E Hughes and was still in London where I’ve checked up to.  (Two other sons, one died as a baby and the other in Italy in 1944.)

There's a couple of with those names in Islington East in 1958 and 1960.

Matilda may not have been removed in 1960 depending on dates.
