Passenger Lists into Victoria
« on: Wednesday 24 October 18 04:07 BST (UK) »
Hello All,
I cannot follow the instructions to find passengers at the Public Record Office Victoria so will be very pleased if some one can help me.
I am looking for Christopher Oates James and his wife Elizabeth Pollard. They married in Cornwall in 1851 and their first Australian child was born at Castlemaine in 1858.
Thank you

Perhaps this is the same couple

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/7139566

October 1857

If this should meet the eye of Mr Christopher James, his wife Elizabeth is waiting for him at no. 21 Londsdale St East.

If so, it suggests the couple may have arrived seperately.

TROVE has an obit for Christopher Oates JAMES, stating that he came to Victoria in 1853, however Jamjar has a possible child registered Cornwall 1855. The obit says he died in March 1909 and was aged 78 so born abt 1830.  His birthplace is given as Ludgvan, Cornwall.

Although this arrival seems a strong possible in many ways, the age  is quite incorrect.

Ship Mt Stuart Elphinstone
Departed Plymouth.
Arr. Melbourne 10/4/1857
JAMES, Oates.
Labourer, born in Cornwall.
C of E and able to read and write.
Born 1837

As a matter of interest, have you looked at the will of Christopher Oats JAMES. He died in 1909.

I started this exercise because I am making sure my research is up to date and I realised I did not have his entry into Australia. With JamJar's answer I started to think about the delay in children arriving after the marriage - there were no children born to this couple in Cornwall - and I now wonder if the Liskeard marriage is my one. Especially as they lived in Lelant - over 50 miles away.

Thanks to Sparrett I will check the UK Census again. Perhaps their marriage was not recorded.

I don't think he was the one on the Mt Stuart Elphinstone - he was a tin miner in Cornwall and was a miner/mine manager in the Daylesford area for many years. I don't think he would have called himself a labourer. Several of his siblings also came to Australia. I will have to make sure he was not with them.

Yes, I have copied the will. It is a doozy. Most of his children he leaves "one shilling".

Lonsdale Street is interesting. There is a Methodist church there and quite a few of this family were of that faith. And if they were apart till 1857 then that explains the first child born in 1858.

I thank you all very much for all the clues you have given me.

The 1861 census show the family JAMES mentioned above.

Looking particularly for the child Matilda Grace JAMES,born about 1855 she is a daughter of William and Grace JAMES and born Liskeard where the family still lives.

There is also a daughter named Elizabeth Pollard JAMES.
also William James born 1853.

So the family suggested as a possible for yours, seems not likely.

Sue

EDIT to ADD

Here is the marriage

Marriages Dec 1850

JAMES    William
POLLARD    Grace
Liskeard    9/244
