This is a possibility for marriage as same date as you have stated:

767/1873 SMITH George Richard to HANE Mary Ann SYDNEY

Jamjar

Well found JJ

I wonder if that's a mistranscribed F for the 1875 birth registered at Waterloo for George W, parents as George F and Mary A SMITH ... #5618

As an aside, I was hoping to find his folks at Waverley with him, but alas he is only with his own family members:

Waverley General Section 9 Row 18 Grave 1458

SMITH Mabel Dorothy Pearl 22 Sep 1 1
SMITH George Frank
SMITH Mary Ann 03 Jul 1933 30
POPE, Mary Ann Elizabeth 28 May 1947 73 - Inscription: Our mother

POPE is the daughter of George, not his wife.

Is the 1933 his wife’s death, with the age mistranscribed to disc?

Just noticed one very nearby:

Waverley General Section 9 Row 18 Grave 1464, 1465

SMITH Jessie Wilson 11 May 1903 28
Wife of Sydney. Day of Henry and Mary Marcus

It’s the grave of her folks and others, no other Smiths there.

Just in case this is of use - digressing to George Francis Smith's born about 1842 in the London area the only one I can't trace from the GRO Birth Index is

GEORGE  FRANCIS   SMITH - mothers maiden name SISLEY
GRO Ref 1844  June Qrter TUNBRIDGE  Vol 05  Page 506

with probable siblings with the same mothers maiden name Horace Smith 1849 and James Smith 1846

Thank you all again! How you have found this information so quickly when I have been searching for about a year amazes me.
Jamjar's list of children tallies with mine (Apologies Florence was youngest: I made a mistake) except that I have an Olive Lily May born on 5 May 1882 after Charles and no Maud. I will order May Ann's birth cert to see if it has any more details about George.

Thank you for the hints about his birth details: I will follow them up. Will post when I find out which one is correct.

George Francis Smith is buried in Waverley Cemetery at W-9-GE-OR-1458. There is no headstone. Find a Grave # 190888903. Mary Ann Ham is also buried there separately at site W-16-GE-OR-2189. Find a Grave #190888950. She is buried with Ethel May smith, James Michael Redman and Muriel Sylvia May Redman. Use iCemetery to get the location on map to help you find them.

There is a headstone. I have the cemetery disc, that’s how I was able to provide the inscription and other details.

There is no inscription for the other folk you mention.

How do you connect the Mary Ann Ham buried with the Redman and the Ethel May Smith? This Ethel isn’t the daughter of George and Mary, as her other initials are B J.

What are the death years for Mary Ham and Ethel May?

14163/1928 HAM Mary A parents JOHN and SARAH WAVERLEY

I believe George’s wife is the one who is transcribed as death 1933 aged 30, but it has been incorrectly transcribed. The transcriber has noted ( Illegible. Headstone flaking), so her date of death and age could most certainly have be a ‘best guess’.

Getting a transcription of the marriage certificate I listed would be better value than another birth certificate.

Yes, you are correct about Olive. I’ll add her to the list and here is Maud:

7877/1885 SMITH MAUD parents GEORGE F and MARY A NEWTOWN
