missing from 1851 census
« on: Saturday 27 October 18 15:58 BST (UK) »
Hi
I can find these details for James Pullan but he seems to be missing from the 1851 census.

Baptised, along with his twin brother Henry, in April 1849 in Bradford, the also records their dob as 22 Dec 1848. ( Henry died when he was young)

In 1861 James is with his parents at the Trafford Arms in Manchester.
James married  to Sarah Ann Taylor in 1870
1871  1881 and 1891 the couple are together with their own children in Bradford. So all in all it has been a very easy search - apart for the 1851 census, can anyone else find him?
Thank you for reading.

Thank you both!   Seems strange to have a 2 year old away from his family, but I am in agreement now that I can see both of the records you have found.

Keyboard86

The 1861 family in Manchester with Henry/Martha as the Heads of the family was their marriage 2nd April 1837 Shipley with Martha being a Riley?

EDIT A Martha Baxter married a John Riley 18th April 1831 Bradford.

I cannot believe you have got to that point so quickly Keyboard! think I may have been under a misunderstanding for some time. I have researched a lot about this family and have felt pretty secure with my findings until now.

Martha Riley married Henry Pullan in 1837 but - and I can't believe I have only just noticed this -  she says she is a spinster.

On the 1841 they are in Manningham Bradford with their daughters Eliza, Isabella & Mary plus they have John Riley aged 7 and Emma Riley so I have always assumed these two were children from a previous marriage of Martha. Baptism records show an Emma baptised 11 Aug 1830 & John baptised 21 May 1834 so dates fit, parents are John & Martha Riley. So where have I gone wrong?

The witnesses to the marriage of Martha Riley and Henry Pullan were Joshua Rastrick and John Berwick - neither are names I have  come across before so I doubt whether they are family.

I have just checked BMD records for the other children born to  Martha and Henry Pullan, before James ( the child in my original question) and one of them is named Isabella Baxter Pullan (Mar 1/4 1839) so that may indicate it is Martha's  original surname.

So is possibly looking like Martha Baxter (b.1813) married John Riley, had two children - Emma 1830 and John 1834 - however the only marriage I can find for these is in 1831 - the year following the baptism of their child Emma.  Would that have been allowed ...(on the baptism record it says Emma daughter of John and Martha Riley )?

In 1837 she marries Henry Pullan, gives her married name of Martha Riley but says she is a spinster.

;D Allowed, I have three in my tree who "Lived together" as Man & Wife and had more than one child baptised prior to their marriage!

But why Martha stated Spinster at marriage to Henry Pullan is a puzzle.
